CHAPTER TWELVE

“Your place is more open than mine,” Candy said. “I have a wall here.” She slid her hand along the length of an imaginary expanse. “I love your furniture.” She strolled around the open space wrapped in nothing but a damp towel. We had showered together after languishing in front of the fire for more than an hour. I gazed at her from the comfort of my sofa while wrapped in my fluffy black bathrobe.

“I’ve always had a thing for mid-century design. I’ve been collecting since my split.”

“Does this work?” she asked as she ran her finger along the top of the old Claritone hi-fi.

I didn’t answer right away as I considered which of my albums would show it off best. Should I go sexy right away or something groovy that might appeal more to her demographic? I shook my head and realized she might be too young to know half the artists in my collection.

Candy turned around and looked at me.

“It works,” I grinned.

She smiled. “Got any cool old albums?”

I stood up and walked to the side wall where my collection was hidden behind two massive sliding barn doors. I pulled one open along the long wall.

“Holy shit,” she said.

I pulled the other one open too and her jaw almost hit the floor. The collection was a little impressive, even I knew that. She walked over to the shelves and started thumbing through them.

“Thank goodness they’re in alphabetical order.”

“Mostly,” I said. “It gets a little crazy on the bottom shelves. That’s the stuff I’ve played recently and haven’t got around to putting back.”

Candy bent down and studied the albums on the bottom shelf with great interest as I watched.

“I want to know what you’ve been listening to,” she said as she looked up at me.

“There’s a big mix. Some albums are for working, some for exercising, some are for chilling out or having a bath.”

“You like baths too?”

“I love baths,” I said.

“I love that you painted your claw foot tub gold.”

She shuffled through the albums on the bottom row and pulled one out. “Can we listen to this?”

She handed me Purple Rain and I smiled. When she rose and stood next to me, I felt the tension build inside my belly again. I wanted to feel her and lie with her and explore every inch of her skin with my tongue. I gripped the album under one arm and pulled her closer. She looked up into my eyes and covered my lips with her mouth. She was sweet and tasted of a hundred kisses. She grabbed onto the belt of my robe and pulled me tight.

“Go relax on the couch,” I whispered. “I’ll put this on.”

She let me go and walked back to the sofa. When she sat down, she let her knees hang open.

“This is a really nice piece,” she said as she smoothed her hands over the cushions of my sofa.

I hovered the needle carefully over the turntable.
